The Deadly 7s Indigenous Rugby program recently concluded at Smithton Primary School.

The Australian Rugby program is available to schools with 20% or higher Indigenous students enrolled at the School.

133 students in six classes from grade one to grade six participated in a 45 minute non-contact rugby training session, coached by University of Tasmania medical student and Burnie local Claire Whiteway and Tasmanian Rugby Pathways & Development Manager Caitlin Ryan.

The lessons were run over 4 Wednesdays, with the program culminating in an inter-class match on the last week so the students could show off what they had learnt.

For some kids this was the first time they had played rugby, but they embraced the program which teaches the basics of the sport including passing backwards, two-handed tag and teamwork.

Tasmanian Rugby looks forward to returning to Smithton Primary, and to continue the development of rugby in the Smithon area in term 4 next year.
