Launceston 1 and Taroona continued their fast start to the 2025 TRU Men’s season while Devonport and Burnie also impressed in rugby’s statewide return.
Launceston 1 were ruthless, running out 110-5 winners over Hobart Harlequins with Peni Vae and TJ Pieters scoring three tries apiece before five-try Penguins centre Aron Lovell (five tries) helped Taroona see off Glenorchy 59-15 at Eady Street.
In the state’s north-west, Devonport backrower Thomas Curtis proved the difference against Launceston 2, scoring four of the Bulls’ seven tries in a 45-40 thriller at the Don Recreation Ground.
Meanwhile, Burnie's men finally ended their winless streak with a 41-10 victory over Eastern Suburbs at North Warrane Oval.
Emus playmaker Lilo Veiseivalu shone with two tries and a conversion to help lift his side to eighth on the TRU Men’s ladder.
In the TasNetworks TRU Women’s competition, reigning premiers Taroona and early season standouts Glenorchy couldn’t be separated with Georgia Sproule and Emma Pritchard scoring doubles in a 17-all draw.
Emus star Rebecca Sweetman was the difference for Burnie in a 69-12 win over Eastern Suburbs, scoring six of her side’s 11 tries, while Tigers trio Claire Griffiths, Tayla Bennett and Vannesa Hadley bagged doubles in a 48-29 win over Harlequins at Rugby Park.
Taroona and Stags continue to dominate the U16 Junior Boys competition following strong wins over Hutchins and Bulls respectively while Devonport remain unbeaten in the U18 Junior Boys division following a 53-33 win over Tigers.
