Tasmania 'punching above its weight' as Australia's next elite referee nursery

Tasmanian Rugby's growing community of match officials have been lauded for "punching above their weight" by the nation's governing body.

It follows a series of strong refereeing performances and appointments on the national stage from a leading Tasmanian trio: Craig Gardner, Georgia Stewart and Sam Mason.

Tasmanian Rugby Union Referees Association president and veteran match official Craig Gardner has been invited to attend the upcoming Dubai 7s and Super Rugby U19s as a match official developer.

Meanwhile, Georgia Stewart has secured an appointment to her second Australian Rugby Shield tournament following her standout performance at the Australian Schools and Junior Rugby Union Championships and earlier contributions to the Super Rugby Women's season.

Finally, Sam Mason's star continues to rise as a match official developer with his appointment to join Georgia at the upcoming Australian Rugby Shield in a MOD capacity.

Rugby Australia match official manager Drew Crozier paid tribute to all three referees and Tasmania's "remarkable achievement" in the referee community.

"Tasmania consistently punches above its weight and is at the top of their game for developing and advancing match officials," Crozier said.

"The efforts and achievements of Craig, Georgia and Sam are testament to a structured and dedicated association that goes above and beyond in their delivery of high quality match officiating.

"These three match officials are a reflection of the outstanding culture and respect that has been fostered by and for Tasmanian Referees and their appointments are hugely deserved."
