TRU Round 1 Women's & Juniors Wrap: Does, UniQueens fire as Hutchins start strong

Round 1 of the statewide women's and juniors competitions got underway on Saturday with Glenorchy and UniQueens posting wins in the inaugural women's round.

Glenorchy ran hot on home soil to defeat Eastern Suburbs 70-0 with Georgia Sproule running in an incredible seven tries for the Does before UniQueens produced a bonus-point win of their own with Fiona Anderson bagging three tries in the 39-5 win over Launceston.

It sets up a mouthwatering Round 2 clash between UniQueens and Glenorchy at UTAS Oval this weekend while Taroona look to kickstart their season against the Tigers after a Round 1 bye.

Meanwhile Hutchins got their U18 Boys season off to a flyer with Max McDermott and Mirko Misson scoring in a 15-5 win over Taroona, who also crossed the paint via Oliver Wilson.

Hutchins also found joy in their opening match of the U16 Boys season with Henry Stone's four-try haul headlining their 57-5 win over the Penguins.

Angus Zeeman (two tries), Tom Alomes (two tries) and Rory Killian (five conversions) also impressed while Shane Randall bagged a try for the Taroona faithful.

In the weekend's final junior fixture, the Eastern Stags ensured a clean-sweep for Glenorchy with Zavier Throw (two tries) and Hamish McNeill (five conversions) starring in a 35-19 win over the Tigers.

Throw's brace headlined a six tries to three showing with Max Hebbink and Ross Downham also scoring for Glenorchy while Nate Henrys, Krishal Gurung and Heyns Jacobs found the paint for Launceston.
