Junior Girls Rugby 7s tournaments will commence around the state in term 2.

The past two years has seen the women’s game explode in popularity, from no competition to 9 teams.

The support of the University of Tasmanian through the Aon Uni 7s High Performance Squad, and the Australian Women’s 7s Team’s Olympic Gold Medal have all contributed to the exposure of the sport in Tasmania, and the interest from Tasmanian women.

To continue the momentum and ensure the long- term success of Women’s rugby, Tasmanian Rugby with the assistance of the clubs will launch Junior Girls 7s tournaments in Hobart, Launceston and Devonport from May this year.

The newly-formed all-female Tamar Vixens club and the AMC Women’s team will support the U14 and U16 Girls 7s tournament in Launceston, the Devonport Rugby Club will run weekly training and matches for U12, U14 and U16 girls in the North West, and the Harlequins, Eastern Suburbs, University and Taroona clubs will enter teams in the U15 and U17 Girls 7s tournaments in Hobart.

A non-contact Youth Girls Touch Rugby 7s tournament will be held at the same time in Hobart, for girls who are keen to try the sport but aren’t sure if they want to tackle straight away.

Girls aged between 16-18 also have the opportunity to play for Tasmania in 15-a-side rugby in the Schoolgirls State Championship in Canberra at the end of June.

No prior rugby experience is necessary to nominate, and the team will be led by an all-female coaching and management staff.

In November, an U17 Tasmanian Girls 7s team will be selected to contest the National Championships in Brisbane.

More information on this tour is here.

An U15 Girls 7s Development team will also be selected.

Tasmanian Rugby is proud to be supporting the growth of Girls Rugby and looks forward to closely contested tournaments around the state.
