Launceston 1 have staked their claim as premiership favourites following an entertaining 54-44 win over bitter rivals Taroona in Round 5 of the TRU Men's competition.

In a rematch of the past two grand finals, Launceston 1 outscored the Penguins eight tries to five in an attacking masterclass spearheaded by hat-trick hero Leone Vonoyauyau.

Taroona held their own with Noah Kazarine kicking all five conversions and an additional three penalties to keep pace with the Tigers but fullback Vonoyauyau's treble proved the difference at Rugby Park.

The result puts Launceston 1 outright first on the competition ladder with 25 points ahead of Taroona (21), who moved down to third on points difference despite earning a losing bonus point.

Meanwhile Glenorchy flexed their muscle on home soil against Eastern Suburbs, running out 151-0 winners to leapfrog Taroona into second place, while Harlequins kicked on late against Launceston 2 to secure a 38-10 bonus-point victory.

Devonport and Burnie both received full points after University and Hobart Lions were forced to withdraw from their respective Round 5 fixtures.

The results offer a glimpse to the competition's latter half when teams will divide into Premiership and Championship divisions.

Launceston 1, Glenorchy, Taroona, Harlequins and Devonport are currently ranked 1-5 with Hobart Lions, Launceston 2, Burnie, University and Eastern Suburbs ranked 6-10.
